Charles Hard (1915 - ), U.S. physicist. His development of microwave oscillators and amplifiers led to his invention of the maser in 1954. He later showed that an optical maser (a laser) was possible. Nobel Prize for Physics (1964, shared with Nicolay Basov [1922 - 2001] and Aleksandr Prokhorov [1916 - 2002])
